The first edition was published in 1834 by the author, John R. Morrison. The second and third editions, published in 1844 and 1848 with Morrison's name appearing on the t.-p., were largely rewritten by Samuel Wells Williams. The revisions were so extensive that with the fourth edition Morrison's name was dropped and William's name appears on the t.-p. as author. cf. Prefaces to the 2d and 4th editions and British museum.
